The One Step Over the Line Award for this week goes to the craven, pallid fucks over at Brown-Forman. This is the company that produces and markets Jack Daniels. They have chosen to discreetly lower the alcohol content of Jack Daniels to 80 proof, a far cry from the original 90 proof recipe. This really hits me where I live, so to speak. I drink a fair (read: fairly outrageous) amount of whiskey, and Jack Daniels had always held a special place in my heart as a drink shared with old friends. I don't appreciate them tampering with the recipe.

Thanks, [info]thebigradu, for bringing this to my attention.

If you had read the article, they are actually calling for a boycott of JD in protest--only by hurting their profits will they see fit to restore the recipe, and the proof.

Haha, sorry, didn't mean it like that. Just exhausted this week, which has made me cranky.

wow. jack daniels is doing some strange stuff. one of my friends yesterday was telling me how they released an anniverary bottle, not sure what it was, maybe 100th? but all it was was different bottle. same % of alcohol and same volume, just a different label. and it was priced at $90.

That is a crappy marketing ploy. Such an anniversary bottle ought to come in a set for that price, with a box and a few glasses or something, at least. Also, they could perhaps use the original recipe if they are going to celebrate the liquor's anniversary. Just saying.

I recommend drinking George Dickel whiskey instead, the only other Tennesse Whiskey.

Though, if you have some loyalty to JD, try Gentleman Jack, it's made differently so you don't feel quite so cheated. Yes, the proof is still 80, but it's double seeped and genuinely is well made.

I am going to make it a goal to find and drink some George Dickel this weekend. If I find it up here, I plan on trying it neat, on the rocks, and in a traditional bourbon recipe.
